Why the Lumix S9 works well on the street
Street photography rewards the camera you actually carry. The S9 is compact, its full-frame sensor keeps useful headroom in changing light and image stabilization helps when you shoot spontaneously by hand.
Its biggest advantage is the direct workflow: prepare a look in MY PHOTO STYLE, judge it before taking the frame and focus entirely on timing, light and composition outside.
My fast base setup for street photography
Start with aperture priority, Auto ISO and a wide to medium aperture. Keep shutter speed at 1/250 second or faster for walking people; use 1/500 second or faster for more energetic movement.
Choose continuous autofocus with human or eye detection. A medium AF area is often more reliable in busy streets than a tiny point and more controlled than fully automatic area selection.
- A mode with Auto ISO
- Aperture around f/2.8 to f/5.6
- Minimum shutter speed 1/250 s
- AF-C with human/eye detection
- Low burst for short, controlled sequences
Exposure and focal length without stress
Bright facades, deep shade and reflective windows change constantly in a city. Watch the highlights and try minus 0.3 to minus 0.7 EV in hard light. Dark areas are usually easier to recover than clipped surfaces.
A focal length between 28 and 40 millimeters feels natural and keeps you close enough to the scene. A 28 mm lens includes more context, while 40 mm creates calmer frames and isolates people more clearly.
Solara for warm, lively street scenes
Solara fits sunshine, golden hour, skin tones and bright cafés. It warms highlights without turning every scene orange, making it an easy starting point for travel and friendly everyday moments.
Keep Solara in its own MY PHOTO STYLE slot so it is ready whenever the light and subject should feel soft, warm or personal.
Epoca for concrete, shade and documentary mood
Under grey skies, around subway entrances, older facades and quieter street scenes, Epoca often feels more believable. Its muted ORWO-inspired color gives concrete and shade character without making the frame artificially colorful.
Solara and Epoca make a useful pair: one slot for warm light, one for cool or documentary situations. Switching takes only a few seconds.
Lumix S9 street cheat sheet
Keep the setup simple and react to the light instead of opening the menu constantly. A safe shutter speed, AF-C and two prepared looks can cover an entire city walk.
If you only want one LUT, start with Solara. Add Epoca as a second fixed slot when you want more documentary depth.
- Moving people: at least 1/250 s
- Quiet scenes: use stabilization and keep ISO lower
- Hard sun: protect highlights with slight negative compensation
- Warm and friendly: Solara
