Why a dedicated B&W LUT instead of desaturate
Saturation at zero makes grey, not film. A proper black-and-white LUT sets channel weights, a contrast curve and a slight paper tone — and you see that in the viewfinder before anyone turns the corner.
LookCraft BW cubes are Rec.709, 33³, for MY PHOTO STYLE. JPEG/HEIF come out finished. If you need color later, shoot RAW or V-Log without LUT in parallel.
Everyday and Berlin light: BW-Berlin-400
My default for street in daylight. Classic street contrast, slightly warm paper, shadows stay readable.
BW-Berlin-400 ships in the Black-and-White Street Pack and the Lumix S9 Starter Pack. One slot for sidewalks, squares, reportage without drama.
Hard light: BW-High-Contrast
Midday sun, bright concrete, hard shadows under train sheds. High-Contrast snaps the mids and keeps true black at 0 — no grey fog.
Not for faces in hard backlight. That is what Soft-Documentary is for.
Night and press feel: BW-Night-Press
Lamps, shop windows, wet asphalt. Night-Press keeps deep mids open enough that coats and faces do not fall into a hole, while staying print-dark.
ISO can go high. The LUT does not fix noise — it turns existing light into a B&W picture.
Soft and warm fiber
BW-Soft-Documentary: less punch, good for people under a flat sky. BW-Warm-Fiber: fiber-paper warmth when the scene should already feel analog.
Both have a slight print patina. That is intentional — not fog over the whole frame.
Slot plan for a street day
Two slots are enough. A third only if you mix night and day the same evening.
- C1: BW-Berlin-400 — day, city, everyday
- C2: BW-High-Contrast or BW-Night-Press — depending on light
- Optional C3: BW-Soft-Documentary — portraits on the street

FAQ
Which B&W LUT first on Lumix?
BW-Berlin-400. It is the everyday look and ships in the Street Pack and the Starter Pack.
Why did older B&W LUTs look too dark?
Too much contrast in the shadows. Current cubes lift deep mids; true black stays at 0.
Can I use a B&W LUT and RAW in parallel?
Yes. JPEG with LUT for speed, RAW without LUT if you want color or a different contrast later.
